Moving Forward on Climate

Moving Forward on Climate Amidst COVID-19

Amidst the COVID-19 pandemic and economic disruption, climate change and really all federally enforced environmental protections are being trammeled. ecoAmerica is joining with partner organizations to shed light on these actions and build collective action to stop and reverse them. We recently signed onto three of these, and urge our Path to Positive, Climate for Health, and Blessed Tomorrow Leadership Circles and coalition organizations to consider doing the same.

The three advocacy efforts described below are:  H.R. 6289 (IH) – Stop Trump’s Oil Payoff Act of 2020, Green Stimulus to Rebuild Our Economy, and Five Principles of Just COVID-19 Relief and Stimulus

The threats to climate and environmental action being promulgated by the federal administration while we all are distracted by the pandemic and related issues are real. They will exacerbate the climate emergency and delay the transition to a thriving green economy as they benefit legacy fossil fuel interests and friends of the administration. ecoAmerica will work to shed light on these issues for our leaders and coalitions and collaborate with all of you to address them. The current sign-ons are:

  • H.R. 6289 (IH) – Stop Trump’s Oil Payoff Act of 2020, is a congressional bill introduced by Ms. Omar (for herself, Mr. Huffman, Ms. Ocasio-Cortez, and Ms. Barragán). The bill repeals a provision that suspends, waives or reduces rents on leases which would promote development and operation of oil drilling on US Outer Continental Shelves. Now is the time to reduce oil production in order to reverse climate change, not to encourage further development. Learn more and join us.
  • Green Stimulus to Rebuild Our Economy is an open letter and call to action for congressional members to endorse a Green Stimulus package. The proposal aims to pledge two trillion dollars to create green jobs, transition away from fossil fuels, and help make our society and economy stronger and more resilient in the face of the pandemic and climate emergency in the years ahead. Learn more and join us
  • Five Principles of Just COVID-19 Relief and Stimulus demands action from federal government prioritizing health for all people, economic relief provided directly to every citizen, assistance focusing on rescuing workers, not corporate executives, and investing in a regenerative economy preventing a future crisis, and protecting our democratic process while protecting each other. Learn more and join us.

Each comports with ecoAmerica’s Vision, Principles and Commitment, and are signed by major national organizations.

  1. We now see how harmful it is for us not to think ahead. We humans naturally don’t like to forecast or believe something large and invisible will happen. We have spirit and we are positive.
I suggest we think about that a bit here in the COVID – !9 epic. Let us pause and believe how similar climate change is in all its invisible gradual harm it is doing across our earth. Let us be prepared but more importantly brave enough to inform our government that the irreversible CO 2 in our atmosphere will kill so many things – our shores, our wildlife, marine life, our food and finally our livable earth.
