American Climate Metrics Survey 2025, Article II

New data from ecoAmerica reveals a resounding cross-party consensus, framing climate action not just as policy, but as a moral responsibility and a fundamental right. Majorities likewise agree that climate solutions should be fair for all, with no one left behind.

Beyond Partisanship: Americans Unite on Clean Air, Water, Energy, and Fair Climate Solutions for All

While news outlets obsessively cover political polarization in America, a new study shows Americans across parties strongly align on their rights to clean air, water, energy, and a safe climate for themselves and their children. Survey data from ecoAmerica reveals a resounding cross-party consensus, framing climate action not just as policy, but as a moral responsibility and a fundamental right. Majorities likewise agree that climate solutions should be fair for all, with no one left behind.

Personal Rights, Moral Responsibility, and a “Safe and Healthy” Climate Supported by Vast Majorities

Americans nearly unanimously support clean air, water, and energy. A vast majority of 92% say clean air and water are critical rights for all people, including 97% Democrats, 90% of Republicans, and 91% of Independents. Nearly 9 in 10 Americans agree everyone has a right to clean energy that does not pollute air or water, including 94% of Democrats, 87% of Republicans, and 82% of Independents.

The consensus extends to our moral responsibility. 88% agree we have a moral responsibility to create a safe and healthy climate for ourselves and our children, with broad agreement across Democrats (95%), Republicans (86%), and Independents (83%). These findings show that Americans speak with one voice, strongly endorsing climate solutions grounded in rights and responsibility for current and future generations.1

Strong Majorities Want “Fair” Climate Solutions

While the climate movement rightly works toward justice and equity, ecoAmerica found that Americans across political affiliations respond even more favorably to the fairness frame. 85% agree that solutions to climate change should be fair, ensuring all communities benefit and no one is left behind. That includes 94% of Democrats, 82% of Republicans, and 84% of independents. The simple yet powerful finding reinforces ecoAmerica’s previous research and makes clear that Americans expect leaders to deliver solutions that provide opportunity and protection for every community.

Turning Shared Values Into Climate Action

These findings show that the nation stands united on climate solutions, with partisan lines fading around a breadth of shared values. Americans strongly support fair climate solutions that keep our air and water clean and protect everyone, everywhere, without leaving any community behind. Now is the time to harness this common ground to advance climate action.

“Amidst escalating partisan rhetoric, Americans are strongly aligned on moral responsibility, personal rights, and fairness for clean air, water, energy, and a safe climate future for all. So, rather than allowing EPA to roll back GHG reporting, leaders should act boldly on climate, with a historic opportunity to protect every community.” — Meighen Speiser, Executive Director, ecoAmerica

Methodology
ecoAmerica designed and administered this survey, which was conducted online from June 26 – July 4, 2025, using SurveyMonkey. The survey yielded a total of 1,013 complete adult responses and used the Census Bureau’s American Community Survey to weigh the national general population and reflect the demographic composition of the US. The sample was drawn from an online panel, and the respondents were screened to ensure that they were over the age of 18. The margin of error for the sample is +/-3%. In interpreting the survey results, it is important to note that all sample surveys are subject to possible sampling errors. Thus, the results of a survey may differ from the results that would be obtained if the entire population were interviewed. The sampling error size depends on the total number of respondents in the survey and the percentage distribution of the responses to a particular question. For example, if 50% of the respondents in a sample of 1,013 respondents answered “Yes” to a particular question, we can be 95% confident that the true percentage would fall within 3 points or range from 47% to 53%.

  1. This is really encouraging to see! Its great to know that Americans overwhelmingly agree on climate action, regardless of political affiliation. Lets hope leaders start reflecting this unity in their policies.
