Pencil 2 Planet is among 10 American Climate Leadership Award finalists to be recognized at the American Climate Leadership Awards Broadcast on April 16.
Pencil 2 Planet is focused on reducing, reusing, and recycling in schools through zero waste and environmental literacy initiatives. Their approach combines conventional methods, like implementing composting programs, with unconventional ones, such as creating environmental artwork from recycled materials. The main objective of Pencil 2 Planet is to inspire long-term sustainable habits and educate students about environmental stewardship.
To achieve their goals, the high schoolers met with key stakeholders, including Calabasas High School leadership, the school district, key staff, the City of Calabasas staff members, Calabasas Environmental Commissioners and Waste Management. In partnership, Pencil 2 Planet is implementing a composting program at CHS and worked with LVUSD and the California Youth Climate Policy (CYCP) leadership program to propose a climate emergency declaration resolution as well as an on-site composting resolution, which is now under review by the school board. Waste Management also supported their efforts by donating compost bins. The students also collaborated with the CHS Art Department to introduce an environmental art curriculum where students create artwork from recycled materials.
