Time for Moral Courage

The 4/29 Supreme Court decision in Louisiana v. Callais (ruling here) is a profound setback for our democracy. It is an attack on long and hard-won fights for voting rights, and guts the guardrails for fair representation in the communities already hit first and worst by climate change.

The case concerned whether Louisiana’s new congressional map is an unconstitutional racial gerrymander.  In 2022, after the State redrew its congressional districts, a federal judge held that the 2022 map likely violated §2 of the Voting Rights Act of 1965, because it did not include an additional majority-black district. But when the State drew a new map, SB8, that contained such a district, the new map was challenged as a racial gerrymander. Rather than honor the Voting Rights Act, SCOTUS sided with self-labeled “non-African-American” challengers and struck down the redistricting.

In solidarity with these communities, we mourn.

A healthy democracy depends on every community having a real voice in decisions that affect their lives, including clean air and safe water, disaster recovery, energy costs, heat protection, and public health. Communities of color have long carried a disproportionate share of pollution, flooding, heat, and health risks, while too often being denied equal influence over the policies meant to protect them. When voting rights are narrowed, as they have been with this SCOTUS ruling, climate justice is weakened.

This is a moment in the history of our country in which none of us should sit idle.

ecoAmerica believes that people living in the United States should have the power to shape a healthier, more prosperous, climate-safe future for themselves and future generations. We will continue working with faith leaders, health professionals, community organizations, and everyday Americans to advance climate solutions that protect people, strengthen communities, and include the voices of those most affected. And, we will be redoubling our efforts to help people nationwide to have safe and fair access to voting through our Election Earth campaign, because we believe elected leaders should lead with moral courage and represent the best interests of their constituencies, especially amidst concurrent social, political, and environmental crises.

Let’s also acknowledge an important truth: we are all affected by this SCOTUS decision. Therefore, let’s all take up the mantle for voting rights. The path forward must be just and equitable in order to regain our democracy and have a chance at a climate-safe world.
