Tara Houska — Giniw Collective, American Climate Leadership Awards 2021 Finalist

Tara Houska — Giniw Collective are among 10 American Climate Leadership Award finalists to be recognized at the American Climate Leadership Summit 2021 (ACLS 2021) on April 27 during the live broadcast.

Giniw Collective is an indigenous-women, 2-spirit led frontline resistance to protect Mother Earth, defend the sacred and live in balance. Their focus is on systemic change that respects Indigenous sovereignty and the severity of the climate crisis. They prioritize traditional knowledge, divestment strategies, and land defense on the frontlines of protecting the earth.

Their work has spurred an enormous amount of support across Turtle Island and beyond for the campaign against Enbridge’s Line 3. Giniw Collective has inspired people to travel thousands of miles in COVID pods to stand on frontlines, and via solidarity efforts internationally. They successfully pressured Minnesota’s Governor to refile a critical appeal by Minnesota’s Department of Commerce, which is suing the Minnesota Public Utility Commission.

The efforts have resulted in Congressional members standing with them and numerous Biden transition team members meeting to discuss their land and wild rice. Giniw Collective is a founding member of Stop the Money Pipeline, and just launched a national campaign against the 18 banks behind Enbridge’s Line 3. Founder Tara Houska is a tribal attorney, land defender and former advisor on Native American affairs to Bernie Sanders.
